Eloundas History

The first known settlement in the area was the organized city-state of Allus, whose inhabitants were at odds with the inhabitants of the Doric Latus. Most of Olounda is submerged in the sea since the end of antiquity and the ruins are visible when diving. Ancient Olous dates back to about 3500 to 4000 years BC. It flourished during the Minoan Era and its population is estimated at around 15,000. Today the ruins of this ancient city are quite prominent in the "Kanali" area. Most of the city collapsed after a powerful earthquake that struck the Gulf of Mirabello and the surrounding area.

Elounda, like all villages and towns, is made up of small areas. The areas with most houses, restaurants, cafes and other buildings are Schisma and Plaka. There are also areas with traditional and ancient houses, such as Mauritian, Kato Chorio (Kato Elounda) and Epano Horio (Upper Elounda). Another area is Katevati where most hotels and a few houses are located. Tsifliki is also an area with many hotels and fewer houses. Cyprus is an area with no hotels and few houses. There are, of course, not only areas with ancient finds, such as Poros, where they are ancient from Ancient Olous, there is only one taverna and some beaches, while at the entrance of the area are apartments, bars and 2 taverns, the island consisting of mountains and hills and there are also ancient finds and the island of Spinalonga with the ancient houses of lepers.
